Web hosting
What you get when a provider hosts your site—and what remains yours to configure, protect and maintain.
What it means
Web hosting is a service that makes a website or web application available to visitors over a network. A host supplies somewhere for the site's files or running software to live, plus a way for requests to reach it. That may be a managed publishing platform, shared account, virtual server or dedicated machine. The service plan determines exactly what is included. Web server basics
A domain name is not the server, and paying for hosting does not automatically register or renew your preferred domain. A hosting account is also not a guarantee that your site is backed up, secure, fast or online every minute. Publishing a website
Try it
Example — trace one ordinary visit. Read this path from left to right; it describes roles, not a live request or a measurement.
Visitor enters https://www.example.com/
↓
DNS supplies a destination for www.example.com
↓
Browser connects to the serving endpoint
↓
Web server returns files or an application response
↓
Browser renders the resultNotice where the hosting service begins: it provides the serving environment and its connectivity. DNS can be run by a different company, and the visitor's browser renders the result. A platform may combine these products, but they remain different jobs. How the web works
What a plan might include
| Part | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Serving environment | Delivers files or runs code | Static files only, or a supported application runtime? |
| Resources | Constrain disk, memory, CPU and traffic | Are the limits measured, shared or guaranteed? |
| Operations | Keeps the service maintained | Who patches the OS, runtime and application? |
| Recovery | Restores a broken or deleted site | Are backups included, and has restore been tested? |
| Security | Protects access and data | Who handles TLS, access controls and incidents? |
These are evaluation questions, not promises every host makes. Some platforms include a managed TLS certificate and automated deployments; on a self-managed server, those tasks can remain yours. AWS explicitly assigns guest-OS patching and network configuration to EC2 customers. Guest system responsibilities
What hosting does not replace
You still need content, control of your domain registration, a safe way to deploy changes, and a plan for losing access to the service. If visitors submit information, determine where that data is stored and how it is recovered. Paying for storage is not the same as having a verified off-site restore.
The visible website can be static files or output generated by an application. A static site still requires a server or delivery service to return those files. A dynamic site may add databases, application processes and maintenance requirements. Static and dynamic web servers
In practice
Start with the site's actual needs, not a server label. For a brochure page or documentation site, a static host may reduce routine administration. A database-backed store or custom API needs a compatible runtime, data storage, operations and monitoring. Compare service boundaries before comparing advertised CPU or bandwidth.
Typical mistake: assuming a domain purchase includes hosting, or assuming that a managed service performs every security task. Read the plan's responsibility table, backup/restore terms, resource limits and exit procedure. Hosting and domain options
