Domain vs hosting

A domain gives people a stable name; hosting serves the site. Compare their responsibilities before connecting them.

What it means

A domain name and web hosting solve different problems. A domain is a human-readable name in DNS, with registration and renewal rules. Hosting is an environment that returns site files or application responses to visitors. You can buy both from one provider, but a bundle does not turn them into one technical service. Publishing options

Think of the domain as the address people remember, and hosting as the service that answers when they use it. The analogy is useful only up to a point: DNS may lead to a CDN or multiple servers rather than a single machine. DNS records and resources

A working website needs both a usable destination and a way for visitors to find it. A domain alone could display no website; a host can sometimes serve content on a platform-provided hostname before you attach your own. Web publishing

Compare the responsibilities

QuestionDomain registration / DNSHosting / serving
What is obtained?Rights to use a registered name; DNS administration may be separateDelivery of files or execution of a web application
Who maintains it?Registrant/registrar; delegated DNS operatorHosting provider and customer according to plan
What breaks if it expires?Visitors may lose reliable use of the nameSite service may stop when hosting ends
Can it be moved independently?Yes, with correct registration and DNS proceduresYes, with deployment and data migration
Does it include email? The domain can name mail services, but mail service is separateOnly if the plan includes email service

The domain registrant has contractual rights and responsibilities, including renewal and management. Those obligations do not disappear if the hosting service manages DNS on the registrant's behalf. ICANN registrants

How they connect

For a normal web setup, a DNS record at the authoritative provider makes a hostname resolve toward the hosting service. The destination might be an IP address, a provider-supplied canonical name or a provider-specific alias. The web service must recognize that hostname and have a suitable HTTPS configuration. DNS does not transfer site content. AWS routing explanation

A change in DNS may not be visible to all recursive resolvers simultaneously because previously cached answers have their own TTL. Do not switch a mail configuration just because a new web host gives you a new address. Email uses its own records and service.

In practice

For a move, first prepare and test the new hosting environment. Then identify the existing authoritative zone, record current values, and change only the web records requested by the destination provider. Confirm both root and www hostnames, HTTPS and any existing mail service. Revert the recorded change if verification fails. Domain connection procedure

Common mistake: purchasing a second domain because a website is down, when the actual problem is an expired hosting plan or incorrect DNS destination.
