VPS vs dedicated server
A VPS has virtual machine boundaries; a dedicated server gives one customer a physical host. Control and cost differ.
What it means
A VPS is a virtual machine with an independent operating-system environment running on physical hardware. A dedicated server in the usual hosting sense gives a customer exclusive use of a physical machine, sometimes called bare metal. Both can serve the same website; they differ in tenancy and control of the underlying resources. Virtual server Bare metal vs VM
Dedicated hardware does not necessarily imply the customer manages every component, and virtual machines can also be placed on dedicated physical hosts. A sole-tenant VM and a bare-metal server are not synonymous. The exact offer matters. VM tenancy

Compare the same criteria
| Criterion | Typical VPS | Typical dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Physical tenancy | VM often shares host hardware | Physical host assigned to one customer |
| OS control | Usually administrator access in VM | Often deep OS access, subject to provider |
| Hardware control | Virtual resource profile; less direct access | Greater ability to select/use full host hardware |
| Resource elasticity | Plans can often be resized or recreated | Hardware upgrades may involve migration |
| Isolation | VM/hypervisor isolation plus provider controls | No unrelated tenant on the assigned host |
| Operations | Guest maintenance per management plan | Maintenance still depends on managed agreement |
| Cost | Smaller bundles can fit small workloads | Pay for a full host even if partly idle |
Performance is workload-specific. A dedicated server may have predictable access to its own physical resources, but configuration, storage, networking and load can still create bottlenecks. A properly sized VPS may perform better for a modest site than an underconfigured bare-metal server. No label ensures an uptime target. Compute models
Isolation is not a single switch
On a standard cloud VM, host hardware can be shared with other customers. Some vendors offer sole-tenant VMs on a host dedicated to one customer's project. That model retains virtual machines while changing physical tenancy, illustrating why “VPS vs dedicated” is not a universal binary across providers. Compute Engine tenancy
In practice
Use a VPS when its resource profile, isolation, storage and operations fit the application. Explore dedicated hardware if a measured workload, licensing requirement or compliance rule needs it. Compare actual benchmark evidence and contractual responsibilities for backups, monitoring, hardware failure and recovery. Do not treat a dedicated host as a substitute for redundant copies or disaster recovery.
Typical mistake: selecting dedicated hardware to solve a slow website without first identifying whether the constraint is network latency, code, database, storage or CPU. Latency vs bandwidth
